A $10 billion agreement paves the way for a new era in Turkey’s defence industry exports.
Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ) is preparing to sign a major agreement with Indonesia for the export of Turkey’s first indigenously developed fifth-generation fighter jet, the National Combat Aircraft (MMU) KAAN.
As part of the Indo Defence 2025 Expo, the agreement — set to be signed today — will see Indonesia place an order for 48 KAAN fighter jets. Negotiations on behalf of Turkey are being led by President of Defence Industries Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün.
$10 Billion Export Milestone
Expected to become one of the largest defence exports in Turkish history, the agreement is projected to reach a total value of approximately $10 billion. This development marks a major global recognition of Turkey’s advancements in fifth-generation fighter jet technology.
Speaking ahead of the signing, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün stated:
“KAAN is a product of Turkish engineering and vision. Today’s signing is not only an export agreement but also a deepening of the strategic partnership between friendly and allied Indonesia and Turkey.”
Indonesia Chooses Turkey Over South Korea
Indonesia had previously supported the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet project jointly developed with South Korea. However, the initiative faced uncertainties due to ongoing technical and financial disagreements between the two countries.
Following these developments, Indonesia’s decision to meet its fifth-generation fighter needs through Turkey’s KAAN platform is being closely watched in international defence circles.
KAAN Steps onto the Global Stage
Developed by Turkish engineers, KAAN features low radar visibility, high manoeuvrability, AI-supported mission systems, and a multi-role attack capability — positioning Turkey among the select group of countries capable of producing fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
The strategic agreement with Indonesia is also of critical importance as it marks KAAN’s first major sale in the global market.
